“The nice thing about Key west is that it’s a fun place with a lot of upper crust qualities without the anxiety,” says Ben Nettleton of Houston, who enjoyed his visit to Key West. “It’s a place to relax.”

Nettleton’s pick for a cool spot in Key West? El Meson de Pepe, a Cuban restaurant that he says has “Great food, Cuban music, nice little outdoor bar, adjoining cigar store,” noting, “It’s a perfect spot to watch the sunset.”

The dress code in the Keys is pretty casual, with a dressy look being linen shorts, a shirt and loafers. Visitors and locals typically wear t-shirts, shorts and flip-flops.

“The best part about the Keys,” says Michael Lee, who lives in Cincinnati but regularly visits Summerland Key, about 20 minutes outside of Key West for fun. “It’s not like any other part of Florida. It’s more like any of the Caribbean islands with U.S. mainland access versus what we know as Florida.”

Lee suggests walking along seaboard around the marina to Duval Street “to kick off the night.” Next grab drinks in the Mallory Square area for the nightly Sunset Celebration.

While in the area, get thirsty! “There are a ton of bar options ranging from the smallest bar to well known bars like the Hogs Breath or Sloppy Joes to The Bull and the clothing optional Garden of Eden at the top,” says Lee.

The fun doesn’t end there. Here’s are some of the must-see nightlife spots in Key West.
